It’s been a busy week on the GMO front following the FDA ruling that genetically-engineered (GE) salmon (to be sold under the name AquAdvantage) is as safe to eat as non-genetically-engineered salmon. This is the first genetically modified food approved for sale in the U.S., and the backlash has been swift and severe.

In an EcoWatch post entitled “Costco and Red Lobster Say No to GMO Salmon,” it is reported that more than 60 grocery store chains have made commitments to not sell GMO salmon, including Safeway, Kroger, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Aldi.

This news drives home an important point. The threat of losing wallet share is what drives change in the marketplace. That’s how the system works. As a consumer, your wallet is your voice. And it’s safe to say that conscious eaters are being heard.

It is important to note that the FDA also released a draft of guidance for the volunteer labeling of food derived from Atlantic salmon, and has invited the public to provide comments.
